Holiday Spirit

Holiday spirit sometimes comes in the most unexpected of ways.  Through my years I have run the gamut of high spirits to bah humbug, and although I can usually muster enough spirit at the appropriate times, I have decided that, spirit, like a family heirloom, must be passed to the younger generations where the smoldering embers of spirit can be coaxed into full blown flames and held in trust for future generations.

This year, somewhat satisfied with my own spirit level, I encountered a younger version of myself, bursting with Christmas spirit as I entered my son’s home for a Christmas feast.  Not only had he and his wife fully decorated for Christmas, but they were so happy and eager to have us over to share their spirit with us.  I feel confident now, that they will pass on enough spirit to their offspring at the appropriate time.  As to the subject of grandchildren, I have only one thing to say to the happy couple, “Let’s get busy, I’m not getting any younger now, am I?”

I purchased this Nativity Scene, which now belongs to Kristen and Anthony in 1991, from Sears for $9.99.  It came so inexpensively, because the Baby Jesus was missing.  Over the years, I bought a Baby Jesus figure, Chris' aunt Kaye bought one and finally we ended up with the current one which seems to fit nicely  into the scene.

I am back

Today is the third day in a row that I have ridden my bicycle.  It has been almost 6 months, but I'm back.  On April 23, 2014 I had my right knee replaced.  On August 13, 2014 I had my left knee done.
It has been a long road back, but it was time, so on Wednesday, I cleaned the bicycle off, put air in the tires, strapped on my helmet and rode it around my development three times.

An inauspicious start perhaps, but a start nonetheless.  Yesterday and today I rode a 4 mile course through Lakewood Ranch and the River Club.  I feel great!!!

RIP Bill Bailey

Just three short years since he came to live with us, Bill Bailey  has made his transition.  On Thursday, October 30, Billy succumbed to the cancer that has ravaged his body for the past year and a half.

Rest in peace faithful friend!  You gave us enough joy and love to fill a lifetime.

Excursion

Today was a big day for me, I took a ride to BJ's with Chris.  I walked to the store from the car, but I rode around the store in one of their electric shopping carts.  I am tired from this excursion, but I feel better for having gotten out there a little bit.

It has been 5 1/2 weeks since my left total knee replacement and although I am healing nicely, I have no desire yet to drive.  I expect to  give driving a try sometime next week!

This is an X-ray of my right knee after surgery.

Birthday Musings

July 4th and I am now 68 years old -- yesterday I was 67.  Seems weird that the passing of one day could make me a year older, but that's the way it is.

I am doing well in retirement.  I recently (April 23) had a total replacement of my right knee and expect to have my left one done before too long.  At a recent doctor's appointment, the scale showed that I dropped another 5 pounds.  Weight loss is going slowly, but it is going in the right direction.  Other than the joints mentioned, I am in relatively good health, Thank You God! I am enjoying getting out and taking pictures more and more.  I have received some positive notes on my Flickr account, I have had a picture published three times in a local paper - my next goal is to win a ribbon in a print contest.

I haven't been able to ride my bike since my knee operation, but I expect to be able to get back to that too, before too long.

My Cousin Anthony Masi died.  Anthony was two years younger than I am.  Rest in peace Anthony.

On a brighter note, my son Anthony married Kristen (Nee Malek) on June 14 with me officiating.  Yeah, I know, but the kids asked me if I could perform the ceremony and, well how could I say no?  They had planned a beach wedding, but as we were on the bridge crossing over to Anna Maria Island, the sky opened up and set a deluge upon us.  In short order my cell phone rang, the ceremony had been moved to the restaurant.  From then on out, everything proceeded without a hitch (except for the obvious).  God bless you, Anthony and Kristen!

Your Other Left

When the scat hits the fan

This appeals to my 5th grade humor.  Scat being transferred by hitting the fan?  How else would one transfer scat?  Why would one want to transfer scat?

Ah, the profound questions of everyday life!

This is an actual sign in downtown Sarasota, FL where SCAT refers to Sarasota County Area Transit.  I guess they did not have anyone on staff who could have steered them away from that name!?  I mean, I do not want to get on a Doo Doo bus.  Would you?
